Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has announced the decision to set up the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) excluding Mumbai. Moreover, another SRA will be set up for prominent cities across the state including Nashik, Aurangabad and Nagpur.

The decision to set up the SRA in major cities of Maharashtra and in the areas under municipal corporations was taken in a meeting chaired by CM Thackeray at Sahyadri Guest House. Mumbai and Pune have been excluded since these cities already have a functional SRA body.

In the meeting, it was also decided to set up a stress fund to expedite the slum rehabilitation schemes. The Chief Minister said that through the stress funds, loans will be made available to the developer from the banks to help with the projects being undertaken under the SRA.

Maharashtra Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad, who was present at the meeting, said that all necessary changes to speed up the projects under SRA will be made soon. Moreover, a proposal to set up a stress fund will be brought in the forthcoming cabinet meeting, he added.

The meeting was also attended by Maharashtra Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde who said that a separate SRA should be set up for municipalities and municipal corporations in the entire MMR excluding Mumbai.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Transport Minister Anil Parab said that concessions should be given to developers while initiating SRA projects. However, a condition to start and finish the work on time should be imposed, he added.

Along with Awhad, Shinde and Parab, Minister of State (MoS) for Housing Satej Patil, Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar, Principal Advisor Ajoy Mehta, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, Chief Executive Officer of SRA Satish Lokhande and other officials were present at the meeting.
