Given that we’re living amidst a pandemic, several educational institutions have considered an online-only format for classes going ahead this year, though there’s no clarity on whether this will be a permanent solution.

Keeping in line with the current situation, Mumbai University has announced that it will start online admissions for its undergraduate courses starting July 24. Admission forms will be available online, with the ability to conduct the entire process online without visiting a nearby centre.

It is said that the online application forms will be available between July 24 and August 4. Interested applicants will also need to attach pre-admission online forms that can be accessed from Mumbai University’s website between July 22 and August 4.

Interested students will have between July 27 and August 4 to send in their filled online applications, while the first list of approved applications (merit list) will go up at 7 PM on August 4, the university officials added. The second and third merit lists will be displayed on August 10 and August 17 respectively.

While shifting to an online format makes a great deal of sense for urban colleges, this is still a far-fetched option for students and colleges based in rural areas of the state. Keeping this in mind, the State Board authorities have allowed some students to visit nearby approved colleges for applications keeping in mind the rules and regulations put in place by local administrators.

On the other hand, students who appeared for the Class XII Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary (HSC) examinations haven’t received their mark sheets yet. Principals from institutions have maintained that there are currently no directions on how or when to make the mark sheets available to the students.

“As per the communication from the state Board, mark sheets of Class XII students (HSC) will reach us by Friday. Principals are yet to decide how these will reach students. We can either courier it or send soft copies of scanned mark sheets. In case the Board itself sends soft copies, it will be easier to share them with the students,” Principal of Hinduja College, Dr Minu Madlani said.

Surprisingly, this comes at a time when most colleges are currently using dedicated software to verify documents online, thus reducing dependency on handling physical papers. There’s no doubt that education has gone through a significant shake-up with the coronavirus pandemic. While some are trying to manage the situation with online classes, students or teachers in many rural areas don’t yet have that opportunity.
