Given the rise in COVID-19 cases in parts of Mumbai, universities and degree colleges are pitching for online examinations for the summer semester exams in the city.

This comes as the University of Mumbai (MU) is yet to confirm a pattern or mode of conduct for final year semester examinations. However, some sources cited by FPJ are reportedly hinting at conducting exams online.

A senior official from MU’s Examinations Department said, “As most degree colleges are now familiar with the online examination process and have developed technical systems for the same, we will conduct summer semester exams via online mode.”

“In addition, we will also suggest colleges to conduct exams via offline mode for those students who do not have access to technical systems and are unable to appear for online exams,” the official added.

Degree colleges are currently conducting online examinations for college-level semester tests among First Year (FY) and Second-Year (SY) students participating in undergraduate (UG) programs.

Despite shifting to online exams, professors say that some students are unable to make it. This could be due to a variety of reasons, including a lack of necessary infrastructure such as computers, internet connectivity, and so on.

On the other hand, some scientific courses are facing trouble with the fully online format given that they generally use practical tests for marks. The principal of Ramnarain Ruia College in Matunga, Anushree Lokur said, “The challenge is to conduct final year practical tests via online mode of certain courses. There are certain programmes mainly under the Science stream where practicals tests are important and carry significant marks.”
