The first merit list for admissions to first-year junior colleges (FYJC) in the city was announced on Thursday. According to the list, 1,20,568 students were allotted in the first list and around 35,787 students made it to their first preferred college, out of which 17,000 were commerce stream applications.

With the number of students scoring 90 per cent and above seeing a marked increase this year, cut-offs for admissions at most colleges in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) were seen to be as high as 90 per cent.

Out of the 2.31 lakh students who had registered for the 3.1 lakh seats in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in 2018, a total of 16,462 students scored 90 per cent and above. With the number of top-scorers going up, cut-offs across streams experienced a surge of about 2-3 per cent.

The first provisional general merit list for FYJC applicants was declared on June 29 in which all the 2.31 lakh applicants were allotted ranks. The 100 per cent club seems to have shrunk this year as only four students scored a perfect 100. While 2,791 students scored 95 per cent, 13,667 scored between 90-94.99 per cent. The competition is going to be tougher for state board candidates as the number of CBSE and ICSE students scoring more than 90 per cent has risen in 2018 as compared to last year.

Admissions under the first merit list will take place between July 6-9. The Education Deputy Director’s department will post more information about the admission process on July 5.
