Even though the examinations for the 2019-20 batch are to commence across the state, five universities have been faced with strikes by their non-teaching staff and have put them on hold.

As per reports, examinations in Amravati, Nanded, Aurangabad, Jalgaon and Nagpur have been deferred. However, Mumbai University is to largely remain unaffected. As the process happens to be decentralized in the city with most of the work being handled by the teachers and the online service providers, there is little dependency on the non-teaching staff. Although, if this is to continue, then the results can be delayed.

Back in July, the UGC issued the revised guidelines with regards to examinations and academic calendar which directed all educational institutions in the country to conduct the final year examination by the end of September 2020. On July 6, the UGC justified the revised guidelines stating that it adequately takes into account the evolving situation of the pandemic which is why it provides sufficient time till the end of September 2020 to conduct these examinations after following the prescribed protocols and procedures relating to the coronavirus.

However, as of now, the UGC has offered a month’s extension for conducting the examinations and declaring the results. Meanwhile, Uday Samant, the Higher Education Minister has assured that he is to look into the matter and come up with a solution in the days to come. Moreover, he has appealed to the union to withdraw the strike call.
