A recent survey conducted at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has shed light on the students' views on formal sex education. The survey was carried out by Insight, the official student media organization. It was part of their special edition focusing on sex education.

The survey revealed that a significant 76% of the students agreed that formal sex education should be a part of the curriculum. This representative survey was administered to over 1,000 students at the university to find the students' opinions.

The data also showed that about 36% of undergraduate students and 59% of postgraduate students have engaged in sexual activity. However, over 60% of these students did not receive any formal sex education. Furthermore, over 38% were unaware of sexually transmitted infections or diseases (STIs or STDs).

The survey took 11 months to complete, and in January 2024, over 1,000 students participated in the poll. The results offered an insight into the general attitudes towards sex on campus.

The poll results indicated that only 28% of respondents received their first formal sex education in their individual schools. Moreover, just over 12% of people are aware of STIs or STDs. Interestingly, even among respondents who are generally aware of the usage of contraceptives, over 25% are not aware that it is possible to use them during oral sex.

The survey also explored the habits of self-pleasure among students. Approximately 85% of the 1,028 respondents admitted to masturbating. The majority of men stated that they masturbate a few times a week, while the highest percentage of women stated that they never indulge in self-pleasure, with 33.3% stating that they do so occasionally.

The survey also touched on the topic of pornography. Out of the 1,028 responses, 661 students expressed concern about the possibility of developing a porn addiction. However, 521 respondents were okay with watching porn as long as it was done in moderation.

One of the key findings of the survey was that female students are less likely than male students to seek medical attention related to sex at the IIT Bombay hospital. Over 61% of male respondents were open to seeking such help, while 61% of female respondents were not. A significant 33.8% of respondents were concerned that if they visited the institution hospital, the administration would be informed of their past sexual health issues.
