Afghan students have been allowed to return to the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. The educational establishment has asked that the students return amid the crisis unfolding in Afghanistan so that they can continue studying. According to reports, several students from the said country were requesting that the institution sanction their return.

Students will be permitted to attend classes from their hostel so that there aren’t any hindrances in their academics.

IIT Bombay Director in a Facebook post stated, “We offered admission to quite a few students from Afghanistan in the master's program this year under scholarships from ICCR. Because of online instructions, they were participating in the class from home. However, due to rapidly deteriorating conditions in their homeland, they wanted to come out of their country and join the hostels on the campus. Although we have approved their request to come to the campus as a special case, we are not sure how late it is for them to pursue their dreams. We hope that they are all safe and can join us soon”.

Based on some accounts, there are 11 postgraduate students in IIT Bombay who are from Afghanistan. The Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) is an initiative of the Union Ministry of External Affairs that helps bring international students to India. Under this initiative, students from different countries are given scholarships and other opportunities for higher education in India.

ICCR is said to be making efforts to ensure that these students can get visas to ensure that their academics aren’t hurt.
