On Monday, March 21, Maharashtra school education minister, Varsha Gaikwad, stated that integrated and bilingual textbooks will be introduced for grade one pupils in Marathi medium schools from the coming academic year, reported news agency PTI.

These comments were made by Gaikwad while she replied to questions posed by certain MLAs in the assembly. The minister was quoted in the account elaborating on how students better comprehend what is being taught to them in their mother tounges.

She added that while this is the case, they should also have an understanding of English words for the appropriate Marathi words. Gaikwad remarked that they are working towards curtailing the burden of their books. In light of this, they will be introducing integrated as well as bilingual books from grade one in Maharashtra. 

It has been reported that learning in one’s mother tongue is in cognizance with the National Education Policy 2020 that emphasises regional languages apart from that of English and Hindi.

Apart from this, Gaikwad added that the demands for the education budget were accepted by the majority in the Assembly. Moreover, the Maharashtra government’s school education and sports department will also be offering online maths content to more than one lakh school students.

This facility is slated to be accessible in Marathi for grades 1-10 students of government schools in Maharashtra. In the first phase, it will be provided to 488 schools for free.
