Recently, a top-ranking student from Ahmednagar found that his admission in the LLM programme at Mumbai University (MU) got rejected because of an alleged error in the paperwork and documentation review.

Bhushan Walunj, 27, who ranked ninth on the MU merit list, was disqualified from the admission process despite submitting an Other Backward Class (OBC) certificate from the central as well as state governments. The MU cited the lack of a state-level non-creamy layer certificate as the reason for rejection.

According to reports, Walunj is an OBC candidate, and his family's annual income is less than ₹8 lakh. This qualifies him as a candidate with a non-creamy layer.

In a report by HT, Walunj explained that the central government's certificate is a three-page document. The first page contains the caste certificate, whereas the third page contains the non-creamy layer certificate. But the state certificate is a single-page document. He believes the admissions clerk mistook his non-creamy layer certificate for a caste certificate, leading to his application being rejected.

Despite his attempts to solve the situation through administration, the university rejected his admission. The MU administration formed a committee consisting of four members to examine the issue. The university appointed the same officers who denied admission earlier. Later, they stood on their last decision, and his application for admission remained rejected.

After seeing not much progress, he filed a petition with the Bombay High Court (HC) on November 9. During the most recent court session, MU told the court that there would be two more rounds of admissions. As far as the case is concerned, MU will present their case at the next hearing.
