The Maharashtra Government has paved the way for 54 new colleges to come under Mumbai University (MU) following the addition of 18 new locations to the perspective plan sent by the university. The perspective plan was cleared at the MU senate meeting recently and had proposed 36 colleges and only a single night college in Dadar.

But since then, the State Government has granted permission for a BMC-run college as well. The government has further proposed arts, commerce and science, law colleges, hospitality studies institutes, and night colleges for the academic year of 2021-22. As of now, Mumbai University has 823 affiliated colleges.

Despite the state’s willingness to include more colleges, some experts believe that many educationists or management may not be willing to set up institutes for the upcoming academic year.

“Last year, the senate had invited managements to start colleges in Dadar and Kherwadi, but there were no takers. It seems unlikely we are going to have anyone interested in starting new colleges in the new academic year too,” a senate member said.

The MU committee comes up with a perspective plan by mapping the existing colleges, the courses they offer, industries in a particular region and matching it with the college-going population in the area. Further, officials also conduct a survey of the parents and students to understand the feasibility or the response to courses based on factors like personal aspirations or job opportunities.

The accrued data is listed out on a locational map, showing which areas are falling behind in terms of colleges, or if some regions have too many colleges. This perspective plan is valid for a period of five years.

After the MU senate approves the plan, it is sent to the State Government for approval. This is when institutions that are planning to set up new colleges in the region can send their applications to the state.

The MU senate had originally cleared new locations like Thane: Mira Road for arts, science, and commerce with hospitality studies, Titwala, Shahapur, and a night college in Ulhasnagar.
