Over the last few years, officials at the Mumbai University have held discussions to provide various benefits to its temporary and permanent employees. However, no conclusions have been drawn yet and no decisions have been taken regarding the same, which has upset the staff. Keeping this in mind, as many as 1,200 temporary employees of the university have planned on holding a protest stating that the administration is not appreciating the staff and not approving the pending demands of temporary employees, despite years of correspondence.

As per reports, the protest was scheduled from Monday, November 23, 2020, and will continue for the next seven days. Demands made by the staff include many issues like health insurance, official identity card, pay hike, occasional leave, subsistence fund, etc. which have been repeatedly reported to the university administration, however, were ignored. Therefore, the employees have decided to speak up against the same, hoping a decision is taken regarding the matters.

Officials also state that the protestors will form a chain, and have planned the same thoroughly, whereby social distancing and safety protocols will be focused. Further, no crowd will be formed during the seven days.

At present, officials are waiting for decisions regarding the health insurance for the benefit of employees, official identity card to facilitate travel, salary receipt, increase in additional allowance according to work, hiring of employees with academic qualification on wage consolidation, payment of arrears from eight years of service between 2009 and 2016, casual leave, medical leave during office hours, provisions for female employees and related aspects.

The staff has also assured that the protest will be held in a peaceful manner by displaying placards against the university's decisions and working pattern. No rules will be flouted keeping the coronavirus pandemic in mind, and the same will take place between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm every day for the next week.
