Uday Samant, Minister of State for Higher and Technical Education, on Monday, August 31, stated that the final-year examinations will be held in the first week of October.

Samant also added that the government has been considering the possibility of taking the examinations online. In a press conference held in Mumbai, Samant stated that amidst the coronavirus crisis, the health of the students is of utmost priority which is why the government has decided to conduct it in the month of October. He also stated that some of the universities will announce the results by October 31, while the rest will announce the results by November 10.

The Supreme Court had earlier stated that the final-year students cannot be given their degrees without examinations, however, adding that the extension of the dates can depend on the states.

A three-judge bench of Supreme Court which comprised of Justices Ashok Bhushan, R Subhash Reddy and MR Shah pronounced the verdict when faced with pleas challenging UGC's directive to conduct final year university exams by September-end in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak.

The apex court, providing major relief to the students, stated that the deadline set by UGC can be changed by the state but the states cannot promote the students without taking examinations. The court further in its statement added that the Maharashtra government's decision to postpone exams under the Disaster Management Act shall remain in its place.
