The State Minister of Higher Education And Technical Education, Uday Samant has announced a tour of all state universities starting September 14. This comes after state universities announced that the end of term final year examinations will be conducted in a multiple-choice or MCQ format.

Previously, principals have raised questions about online examinations particularly in regions where internet connectivity is scarce while some are concerned about proctoring during the examinations.

Samant held a Facebook Live session with vice-chancellors of all universities on Sunday where he acknowledged that several students are unhappy with the decision to conduct exams online, while he also added that the authorities were only following the orders of the Supreme Court. The minister further said that this decision was forced on them given the situation surrounding COVID-19 which continues to spread across Maharashtra.

“Most universities have also decided to put together a question bank for all subjects for the benefit of students. So, I request all students to focus on studies and not get worried about anything else,” he added. The minister will reportedly start his physical tour of the state’s universities with the Gondwana University in Gadchiroli.

The state’s battle with COVID-19 continues as its case tally crossed 10.6 lakh recently. Of the 79,754 COVID-19 deaths reported in India, 29,531 have come from Maharashtra. These circumstances certainly justify the shifting of exams to an online format, though questions still remain about the smooth conduction of these examinations, especially in rural areas of the state.
