On Saturday, the State Education Department announced the decision to reduce the syllabus from Class 1 to Class 12 by 25 per cent for the academic year 2020-21. This move was decided as the ongoing coronavirus crisis has caused a delay in the academic year of the students across the state.

The Education Department said in media reports that the syllabus of 101 subjects in total has been reduced. Out of these 101 subjects, syllabus of 22 subjects were omitted at the primary level, 20 at the secondary level and 59 at the higher secondary level.

However, while some chapters have been omitted from languages, the grammar in each of these chapters will still be taught and considered for assessments by the board. As per the Education Department, just a few chunks of chapters have been omitted or kept for self-study in the revised syllabus and these reductions have been made without changing the core of the chapters.

An educational calendar has been created through the Maharashtra State Council for Educational Research and Training and the reduced part of the syllabus is being omitted from that calendar. As per media reports, Balbharti is also going to upload a revised set of books online. In these revised books, the syllabus in blue will stay as per usual, and the parts in red will be given for self-study or homework to the students.

The 25 per cent of syllabus reduced section is being published on the websites www.maa.ac.in and www.ebalbharati.in.
