On Tuesday, November 16, the Maharashtra school education and health departments accorded the go-ahead for the commencement of in-person classes for grades 5-7 in urban areas and 1-4 in the hinterland throughout the state, post a meeting with the pediatric COVID-19 task force, highlighted reports.

Based on accounts, the state health minister, Rajesh Tope was quoted elaborating on how post the Diwali festivities the number of COVID-19 cases continue to remain low, thus it looks like schools are safe to reopen. However, a final decision will be undertaken once the proposal is placed before Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray who is recovering after his surgery.

According to narratives, in the meeting that was chaired by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, it was decided to reopen physical classes for the remaining classes in the coming 15 days. Presently, in urban areas, classes for grades 8-12 are open and in the hinterland, grades 5-12 are operational.

It is believed that education department officers in Mumbai have commenced accumulating data of students from grades 5-7. Currently, schools are closed for the Diwali break and will recommence operations from November 22 onwards.

On the other hand, some accounts claim that student attendance has been below par since reopening. It is anticipated that the standard operating procedures for schools are likely to be revised. At present, schools operate for three hours and snack breaks aren’t permitted.
