Maharashtra's Common Entrance Test (CET) cell has witnessed a rise in the number of applications from students wanting to pursue engineering courses. Artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and a number of other emerging branches in engineering courses has pulled some aspirants back in the course.

This year the number has gone up by almost 15% compared to last year when nearly 96,337 candidates registered for the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) in Maharashtra. According to reports, nearly 1.1 lakh students registered for the centralised admission process till Tuesday, November 23.

In 2020, out of the registered candidates for the CAP, 68,451 eventually took admissions. However, this year it is expected that there will be a rise in enrollment too, with more computer-related courses being offered by the All-India Council by Technical Education (AICTE).

It is since last year that the council has been promoting these courses. An official from CET cell said that with students being acquainted with the online medium, they are researching the new courses online.

During the 2020 engineering admissions, courses related to IT and computers were ruling the charts. However, after the pandemic, the vacancies dropped to 10-15% in these courses compared to the previous year's 30-35% drop. Even the seats in new branches that were introduced last year also got filled.

Meanwhile, around 60-70% of vacancies were reported in courses like mechanical, civil and electrical engineering.
