Central Government issues guidelines to reopen schools in India from October 15

Union Cabinet Minister for Education, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, shared the information, and stated that students may attend schools only with the written consent of parents. However, online education is encouraged keeping safety practices in mind.

Coronavirus cases in India have been at a rapid rise, however, under the Unlock initiative, the Education Department at the Central government has issued a new set of guidelines to start schools

As per the unlock 5.0 guidelines issued for October 2020, schools and educational institutions across India can resume operations from October 15, and this will be permitted in a phase-wise manner. This decision was appreciated by some parents, however, many did not agree with the decision keeping the increasing cases in mind. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has imposed another lockdown until October 31, 2020, basis which schools, colleges, coaching centres and other educational facilities will remain closed.

The revised guidelines state that schools will first resume for higher grades and then gradually reopen for lower grades and class. Respective governments from the states and Union Territories (UTs) have been asked to formulate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) keeping the current scenario in mind, and the same will be applicable for schools in those states or UTs.

Officials have also asked the governments to ensure the health, public hygiene, social distancing and other safety, precautionary protocols are mentioned in the SOPs and followed strictly.

Furthermore, students will be able to attend school only if the parent issues written permission regarding the same, and attendance will be allowed in the classroom thereafter. Having said this, parents and students have been encouraged to adopt online learning instead of attending school in person, as it would be safe at these times.

States governments should also schools to be responsible for providing healthy mid-day meals on a regular basis, and the same should be made in a clean and safe environment.

Union Cabinet Minister for Education, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, took to Twitter to share the information.

Sharing more, he said, "Students may attend schools only with the written consent of parents. There will be flexibility in attendance norms. Students may opt for online classes rather than physically attend school.

"Precautions to be taken for preparing and serving #Midday Meal in schools. The alternative academic calendar of @ncert may be followed. No assessment till up to 2-3 weeks of school reopening. Use of #ICT & online learning shall continue to be encouraged. The SOP also provides for guidelines on ensuring emotion well being of students and teachers with a reference drawn to #Manodarpan initiative," added Dr RP Nishank.
