The University of Mumbai (MU) on Sunday, October 17, released a standard operating procedure (SOP) for its affiliated colleges, days ahead of reopening of classes for degree-college students after being shut for a year and a half.

A total of 837 colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are affiliated with Mumbai University.

This comes after the state government last week announced the reopening of colleges from October 20. In a government resolution (GR), it said the final decision will rest with individual universities and their respective local civic bodies.

According to reports, there are three SOPs released by Mumbai University in the circular issued on Sunday. One is for college authorities and students, the second for the staff of the colleges and the third for steps to be taken by college authorities on noticing COVID-19 symptoms/positive cases.

Here’s the list of SOPs:

  • Even as lectures in offline mode can begin, cafeteria or canteens and stalls outside or within colleges shall remain closed along with any shops on campus such as for stationery items.
  • A 6-8 feet gap between the lecturer and first benchers should be maintained. Meanwhile, students will be seated in classrooms while leaving alternate benches vacant and if needed, the college can create batches for imparting lectures/instructions.
  • All students and staff will have to wear a face mask at all times
  • The college authorities have been asked to take every measure possible to ensure social distancing, wearing masks and maintaining hygiene among several other steps.
  • The order states that only those colleges/campuses/educational institutions are allowed to be opened, where the concerned local authorities have not imposed any containment restrictions.
  • The directive also asks colleges to stagger timings for entry and exit for different programs that are conducted in the college.
  • College principals will have to keep a record of vaccination of staff, students and teachers, having copies of vaccination certificates.
  • In addition, officers and staff/visitors/students to be encouraged to install Aarogya Setu app on phone.
  • Students/staff living in containment zones can’t attend physical classes.
  • Combined instructional module of physical and online teaching should be followed.
  • Extra-curricular activities like sports may be allowed where physical distancing is feasible. Contact sports should be avoided. Swimming pools, wherever applicable, shall remain closed
  • Cultural activities should be avoided.
  • It also suggested the college management to ensure the availability of a medical practitioner on campus during work hours.
  • Regular sanitisation of common surfaces and office spaces needs to be undertaken.
