The Department of Sanskrit, established in 1963 in the University of Mumbai, is celebrating its sixth anniversary this year. On this occasion, 4 new postgraduate courses are being started through this department. In which M. A. Yoga Shastra, M. A. Economics, M. A. Arsha Mahakavya-Purana, and M. A. Abhijat Sanskrit Literature consists of four postgraduate courses.


M. A. Yogic texts in Sanskrit language will be taught in this Yoga Shastra course. It will be accompanied by a demonstration. This course will be useful for all yoga teachers, yoga practitioners and those who are curious. In M. A. Arsha Epics and Puranas course, it is expected to study Ramayana-Mahabharata and Puranas from various perspectives.

Students can work to assist film and serial production houses. The syllabus of M. A. Arthashastra is based on Kautilya Arthashastra and similar texts. Students will be able to apply Chanakyaneti at various levels. M. A. Classical Sanskrit Literature course will introduce and appreciate the rich literature in the Sanskrit language.


M. A. Sanskrit course has been conducted for many years with various specialisations. Apart from this, the department intends to start super specialised courses. The Indian Knowledge System has been given importance in National Education Policy. In that regard, the courses conducted by the Sanskrit department will play an important role," said Dr. Shakuntala Gawde, Head, Department of Sanskrit, University of Mumbai.


For all these four courses a degree holder can take admission in any discipline but it will be mandatory to give an entrance exam of 200 marks. Since Sanskrit language is the main source of these subjects, students will be given basic knowledge of Sanskrit language and grammar in all these courses.

At the same time, a diploma course on Bhagavad Gita is being started for the first time by Mumbai University. Although Bhagavad Gita is taught by spiritual institutions, this course will be unique in that it is a course that interprets and analyses Bhagavad Gita from various points of view. 12th pass is the minimum qualification for this course and there is no age requirement.

On the occasion of Hirak Mahotsav, 60 lectures on the ancient Indian knowledge system will be organised by the Sanskrit department through virtual medium and this lecture series will be open to all. More information can be obtained from the website www.sanskritbhavan.mu.ac.in.
