On Wednesday, February 17, parents from schools across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) gathered at the Azad Maidan demanding 50 per cent reduction in tuition fee, a 100 per cent waiver of term fees collected twice a year and ensuring that access to online classes continues even in case of non-payment. It has also come across that the parents may continue their protest until the government meets their demands.

The protest was organised by an NGO Forum for Fairness in Education, which is a parents’ association in Mumbai. The protest saw the participation of parents from Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.

Besides, 11 other parents' groups from the city have pledged their support to the protest. Most of these groups have held protests at the school level over the past 10 months.

The parents plan to continue to protest at Azad Maidan until the government takes a decision and initiates stern action against the schools that have flouted norms, said a member of the association.

Moreover, the Parents had complained to the Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad against private institutions for looting fees, especially during COVID-19 crisis.

Earlier, on May 8, the education department had issued circular asking schools not to hike fees for the ongoing academic year, provide easy payment options and not force parents to pay the fees. However, the circular was challenged in the Bombay High Court and eventually stayed.
