School vans with less than 13 seats could be discontinued post Diwali

The Bombay High Court has ruled a decision in favour of school bus associations which were demanding a ban on school vans having less than 13 seats. However, this decision will be implied post-Diwali. 

We have been fighting for student’s safety since years now. Why different rules for school vans and school buses? We have filed petitions regarding the same many times. We are glad that the decision is in our favour and after Diwali, school vans which have less than 13 seats will be taken off from the road,” Anil Garg, President, School Bus Association.


Guidelines for school vans and buses


1. Driver should have five years of driving experience
2. School van/bus should have contract with school
3. Driver should not have a case against him in terms of driving
4. Driver should have a license
5. Bus should only be used for school
6. There should be more than 13 seats in a school van/bus
7. School bus should not be older than 15 years
8. School bus/van should have limited number of students
9. There should be an emergency exit, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher in the bus
10. There should be at least two attendants in the bus/van
