Schools across Maharashtra to reopen from November 23

CM Uddhav Thackeray and the ministry decided the same in a meeting held on Saturday, November 7, 2020. Officials have been asked to test the staff, sanitise the schools and take necessary precautions. Schools will reopen initially for classes 9-12.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, on Saturday, November 7, directed that schools across Maharashtra, to start classes for classes 9-12. Sharing more information, he said that the schools can resume post-Diwali and the officials concerned should take proper precautions for the safety of students.

The decision was taken at a meeting hosted by video conferencing in the presence of the State School Education Minister  Varsha Gaikwad, Minister of State Bachchu Kadu, Additional Chief Secretary Vandana Krishna among others. He also stated that keeping the global outbreak in mind, one should stay alert about the possibility of another COVID, as the same cannot be ruled out. Adding further, he asked the teams to be vigilant for the next few days, especially after Diwali/

Certain schools across the state have been used as quarantine centres and hence cannot be closed. Considering this, the local administration has been asked to check if the classes for these schools can be started at an alternative location. CMO took to Twitter and shared, "The Chief Minister has directed the teams to strictly adhere to safety protocols by sanitising schools and inspecting the staff. He has also appealed to the parents to not send children to school if the child or anyone else in the house is unwell."

Schools have been asked to strictly consider sanitisation of the premises and inspection of the teachers on a priority basis. Moreover, parents have been asked to not to send the children to school if they or anyone in the household have any illness or COVID-related symptoms.

Minister Varsha Gaikwad has also directed the administrations to test all the teachers between November 17 and 22, before the schools reopen. Besides this, thermal checking of students will have to be done on a mandatory basis, starting November 23, 2020. 

Guidelines have been issued for the classrooms, whereby students will be seated on a bench and will have to bring their own food and water bottles. The school will only function for four hours a day for selected subjects like science, mathematics and Englis. Further, students can also choose online classes for these and other subjects. A detailed SOP has been prepared for the commencement. Schools will be reopened in a phase-wise manner, in collaboration with the local administration, added Additional Chief Secretary, Vandana Krishna.
