After complaints of teachers being asked to report to schools every day, the Maharashtra government on Friday stated that the teachers at schools in red zones can work from home.

In its additional guidelines, the state government said that the teachers can be called to schools but only for two days a week for work related to e-learning. The schools in red zones have started their academic session online this year given the rising cases of the coronavirus.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Pune are one of the worst affected regions in Maharashtra due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Therefore, the government had decided to shut schools in the red zones for the safety of children and others.

However, the teachers were being asked to report to school every day for non-teaching purposes. This was difficult for the teachers as there is a lack of public transport in the region due to the lockdown restrictions.

The state administration has also allowed schools and colleges to turn into COVID care centres or quarantine centres. Meanwhile, the administrations of such schools have been instructed to not call their teachers until further notice by the government.

Women teachers with health issues and male teaches above the age of 55 have been exempted from the COVID duty assigned by the state government.

Meanwhile, the Uddhav Thackeray government has decided to reopen schools in non-red zone areas for 9th to 12th standard. The state has decided to open schools in a staggered manner. The classes for 6th to 8th standard will start in August while the schools will open in September for third to the fifth standard.
