Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting the postponement of the medical postgraduate examinations till December 2020.
In his letter, Thackeray has requested the Prime Minister to intervene to postpone the final year exams of Master of Medicine and Master of Science (MD/MS) till December as those are required to take these exams are currently working on the frontline.
“The final year resident doctors who are required to take these examinations are presently working on the frontline in all Government of Maharashtra and Municipal Medical Colleges assisting the clinical management of COVID-19 patients,” Thackeray wrote.
The Chief Minister further said that if exams are conducted as per the schedule there would be a serious shortage of trained doctors during the crucial period. The final year MD/MS exams are scheduled to be held from July 15, 2020, and Thackeray has asked PM Modi to intervene.
Thackeray informed that the medical postgraduate examination for the academic year 2020-21 was supposed to happen in the month of May or June. However, in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, these exams were postponed. Now, the Board of Governors of the Medical Council of India (MCI BOG) has issued an advisory to all universities to complete these exams by June 30.
Therefore, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences in Nashik has proposed the state government that these exams shall be conducted from June 15. However, those who are required to take these examinations are on COVID-19 duty and if the exams are conducted now, it will create a shortage of doctors.
