Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi again seeking his intervention for cancellation of final years examinations for professional courses.

In his letter, Thackeray has asked the Prime Minister to direct all national apex regulatory bodies to cancel the examinations of all professional courses and endorse Maharashtra’s decision to do the same.

The Maharashtra government has already decided to cancel the final year examinations for all non-professional courses despite objections from Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. On its decision to cancel the exams, the state government said that it has the power to do so given the COVID-19 situation.

Thackeray also wrote to PM Modi earlier demanding the cancellation of final year medical post-graduate exams. The Chief Minister said that the final year students who are supposed to take their exams starting from July 15 will lead to a shortage of trained medical professional at the time of COVID-19 outbreak as most of them are on frontline duties in hospitals.

In his recent letter, Thackeray has pointed out that the All Indian Council for Technical Education, Pharmacy Council of India, Bar Council of India, National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology among others should cancel their exams for students who have enrolled for their courses.

The Maharashtra government has maintained that the examinations can’t be held in the state due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases. Thackeray has urged the Prime Minister to instruct the central apex bodies to issue uniform guidelines on cancellation of the final year exams.

The number of cases in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Pune are increasing on a daily basis and the examinations can’t be held in such situations.
