The Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union (BUCTU) has approached the University Grants Commission (UGC) after failing to get the attention of Mumbai University (MU) officials over exam dates.

The BUCTU has written a few letters to the MU vice-chancellor by indicating that the first-year degree college exams had been scheduled without complying to the mandatory 90-day working rule put in place by the UGC.

“Due to Covid-19, admissions to the first-year batches were delayed and most colleges managed to start regular lectures only by October, despite the university failing to share an official date of commencement of classes for the batch. As a result, online lectures for first-year batches started in a non-uniform manner,” an excerpt from the letter sent by the BUCTU reads.

The BUCTU has reportedly received no response from MU despite repeated letters. “Keeping in mind the welfare of students, we request the UGC to direct MU to confirm with the stipulated 90-day teaching rule, and postpone exams until the last week of January 2021,” the letter added.

The letter goes on to say that the uncertainty and the ensuing confusion has left students of the first-year batch in a difficult situation as they are struggling to cope with the study portion so as to prepare for the upcoming examinations.

A circular issued by Mumbai University on November 18 said that all affiliated colleges are to hold online exams for current batches of the undergraduate courses by December. Meanwhile, post-graduate exams were to be completed by January 2021 as per MU’s circular.

But earlier this month, MU issued a clarification saying that all affiliated colleges should finish their exams for first-year batches by January 9, 2021.
