Nature training program has been started from this year to make about 7 thousand students studying in class V to X of Thane Municipal Corporation schools environment literate. This activity is being done in collaboration with Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and a special program has been planned for students of municipal schools.


The objective of this program is to impart environmental education to the students of Thane Municipal Schools. On this occasion, these students coming from an underprivileged section and low economic background will get an opportunity to learn about nature and understand the importance of biodiversity conservation. The Thane Municipal Commissioner (TMC) Abhijit Bangar believes that this opportunity will be valuable in student's educational journey.


Having the support of a reputed institution like BNHS for unbiased education will give the students of municipal schools a better opportunity than the students of private schools. As they are being formed as citizens of Thane, environmental awareness will be useful for their personality development, the commissioner expressed.

In this activity, the Education Officer and Coordinator of BNHS will conduct an interactive and concept based presentation on Environmental Awareness. Programs on birds, butterflies, plants, biodiversity around us, plastic pollution, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, eco-friendly lifestyle will be organised in schools next year.


Apart from that, students of municipal schools will be taken for study tours to different places like Conservation Education Centre, Thane creek. Guides will be given to make notes about mangroves, plants, birds.


Through this initiative, students of municipal schools will get clean education, thereby increasing environmental awareness. Students will learn about Mumbai-Thane's environment, forests, wildlife, biodiversity, and our role in their conservation. This initiative will help increase environmental literacy by reaching a maximum number of students and teachers.


The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) is the largest environmental research organisation in the Indian subcontinent. It has extensive experience in the three fields of nature conservation, research and education. This institution, which is about 140 years old, is working under various projects with the Central Government, State Government, National and International Research Institutes. 


Various activities are implemented by the organisation for environment conservation and preservation. The organisation is also working on the Thane creek area, flamingo conservation. An agreement has been signed between Thane Municipal Education Department and BNHS for nature education activities and its implementation has also started.
