In view of the coronavirus outbreak in the country, Mumbai University has announced that there will be no increase in fees for the academic year 2020-2021.

While the whole world is fighting the contagious disease right now, the number of patients suffering from the coronavirus has been increasing in India. In the country, Maharashtra has been the worst affected state with 1,35,769 cases. In a circular issued by the University of Mumbai, it has therefore asked all the colleges coming under its purview not to increase the tuition fees of any kind in view of the current situation, along with the facility to provide a provision for the needy students with respect to fees.

As a consequence of the surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai, many examinations have also been cancelled. At the same time, in many areas of the city, the lockdown has been imposed once again in the containment zone so that the number of COVID-19 patients can be controlled.

Earlier, the University of Mumbai was ranked amongst the top 100 colleges in the country according to the fifth National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The NIRF was released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development as MU saw a big leap from its rank last year.

The NIRF adopts a methodology granted by the Union HRD to evaluate and rank universities do so on multiple parameters which include teaching, research work, outcomes, outreach and inclusivity in order to rank the colleges.

As per the data shared by the HRD ministry, over 1,600 colleges in the country participated in NIRF this year, however, only five colleges from the state showed up in the top 100 college list 2020. While the top five spots were taken by Delhi-based colleges, Nirmala Niketan’s College of Social Work, Churchgate bagged the rank 62 with the St Xavier’s College being placed at the rank 90 in the top college's list.
