Karnad who was born on May 19, 1938 in Mumbai was an actor, director, Kannada writer, playwright and a Rhodes scholar with immense contribution in Tollywood and Bollywood. He was awarded the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan in 1974 and 1992 respectively. Taking into account his contribution in literature he was awarded the Jnanpith in 1998 which is the highest literary award in India.
