Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut’s statement on India's freedom from British colonial rule has sparked a huge controversy.

Soon after the remarks were made, many have slammed the actress and also demanded to take back her Padma Shri award.

Kangana Ranaut landed herself in a massive controversy with her comment stating that India's Independence in 1947 was 'bheek' or alms. She said the country attained actual Independence in 2014 -- when the Narendra Modi-led government came to power.

The ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition party in Maharashtra came in support and condemned her comments.

Maharashtra Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Nawab Malik slammed Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut for her controversial remarks on the country's Independence and demanded that the Padma Shri award should be revoked.

"We strongly condemn actress Kangana Ranaut's statement (India got freedom in 2014). She insulted freedom fighters. Centre must take back the Padma Shri from Kangana and arrest her," Nawab Malik was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

"Looks like Kangana Ranaut took a heavy dose of Malana Cream (a particular variety of hashish which grows specifically in Himachal Pradesh) before making such a statement," he added.

The main opposition Congress party called her remarks "insensitive" and treason. Several leaders of the party have said she must apologise to the nation and she must be stripped of the top civilian honour.

In a series of tweets, MP Anand Sharma called her statement "shocking and outrageous" and urged the President to withdraw the Padma Shri award, India's fourth highest civilian honour, which was given to her recently.

Meanwhile, a Shiv Sena leader, Neelam Gorhe, also says the actor must face a sedition case.

In addition, Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has asked the Mumbai Police to register a case against the actor. Mumbai AAP leader Preeti Sharma Menon says what she said is "seditious and inflammatory".

The 34-year-old actor, who received the Padma Shri earlier this week and has won national awards in the past, has always been vocal about her support for the ruling BJP and has been known to voice her political stand without tempering it.

Moreover, Ranaut is not new to controversies. She's often in the news for making provocative statements that spark social media trends.
