Films have a huge fan base in India. Due to this, almost thousands of films based on different topics are released at the box office every year. Some of these films do very well at the box office. Due to this many people look forward to Fridays every week to watch new movies that hit the box office.

Many movies are produced in our country so every week different movies are seen at the box office. The reason behind this is that there are many languages in India and different topics are dealt with through films in those languages. This is the diversity of Indian cinema.

In many countries where films are made in only one language. However, India is far ahead in this regard. We have a diversity of languages so films are also made in many languages and when it comes to movie releases in India, one commonality is that most of the movies release on Fridays. But have you ever wondered why Friday is chosen for movie release? Let’s find out.

This is why most movies are released on Fridays

In Indian cinema, films are released only on Fridays. The main reason for this is that Friday is considered the last working day of the week. Saturday and Sunday are holidays. As it is a holiday most of the people go with their family and friends to watch movies on Friday night or Saturday, Sunday. This helps the movie to do a good collection and also determines the success or failure of the film.

Another reason for this is that most people in India did not have colour TV for many years after independence. So people used to go to theatres and watch movies. Therefore, the employees of the film industry were given a holiday after half a day on Friday. So that they too can watch the movie with the family and it was also considered good as per the collection of the movie.

Where did the practice of releasing movies on Friday come from?

India does not have the practice of releasing films on Fridays. It really started in Hollywood around 1940. Before 1960 there was no fixed date for the release of films in India. Meanwhile, in 1960, the historical film 'Mughal-e-Azam' was released on August 5, 1960 and it was Friday. The film was a huge success. It was the talk of the town not only in India but across the world.

After that the filmmakers started choosing Friday as the day to release the film. However, not all films are released on Fridays. Breaking this trend, many filmmakers have also released films on different days and have had success. But especially in Bollywood, the trend of releasing movies on Fridays is still followed.
