Indian television channels are moving towards progressive content, where they want the men, women, and families to understand and drive the change for the good. Long gone are the saas-bahu drama shows where women used to suffer, cry and fight. It is time to raise the voice, and bring a new revolution for a better tomorrow. The same thought is supported strongly by Zee TV, who under their new ideology – Aaj Likhenge Kal – have brought a new show, Kaleerein, for their audience.

Mumbai Live spoke to Nikhil Sinha, the producer of the show from Triangle Film Company, to understand the vision behind the concept. Here are the excerpts

About the subject

This is a subject which one would have come across every day, but people do not pay attention to. It has been happening in our daily lives. We wanted to create an awareness and pass on the message to people that is wrong to mould someone, only for the wedding, for the new life.

Thought behind the character

Meera is a strong character. She faces challenges to ensure she doesn’t change. Meera’s role reflects many girls and women, and with this character, a lot of them will be able to relate to them. Often we have seen women change their preferences forcefully post marriage or being in a relationship, only because she needs to fit in a new home, or in a new life. She opposes it and we need many girls to focus on this thought and speak up.

The shift in production and choice of this show

We are in 2018, and we wanted to create a show which people can be a part of. I now want to be a part of shows that drive change. Back then, the shows were created as per likes and audience preferences. I have done love story, family shows, fantasies, historical and mythological shows too. This subject appeals to the viewers now. It is time we need to be a part of the social change and contribute to the lives of many people

Acceptance from the audience – a challenge?

We have categorized the audience today, and it is wrong. We create a regressive or social drama and then say that people do not prefer watching. As production houses or creative professionals, we need to package a beautiful thought with a sensible, interesting story – the thought of which resonates and stays with the people.

Failure in mythological or historical shows today

The problem is not with the stories or repetition. The storytelling and authenticity is to be questioned, where the makers are interpreting a lot from these epic stories. We need to keep it simple and keep it the way it is supposed to be narrated, and not misinterpret only to make it new for the audience. However, it is difficult to say why it does not work. As long as take the liberty to show the truth based on true facts and responsibility, then there is a high chance for the audience to work. We should not tamper with history.

Message for women from this show

It is not the girls, but we want the families and parents to watch. We want the girls to know that marriage is not the ultimate destination. One should prioritize life, work and everything one is passionate about. Girls should be independent, outspoken and true to their thoughts. They should lead a life on their own terms, and with the support of their parents and partners.
