In a major boost to electric vehicle, the Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray today, February 23, launched a civic-run EV cell in Mumbai.

Taking it to Twitter, Thackeray shared: "We launched Mumbai EV Cell in partnership with BMC and WRI to accelerate EV transition and adoption. With experts working towards sustainable mobility, this cell will assist in creating a network of charging stations, supporting battery development and market penetration."

According to reports, Thackeray, who is also the guardian minister of Mumbai suburbs launched the cell from Sahyadri Guest House.

"This is just the beginning. We have a long way to go in this hour of climate emergency. I am thankful to WRI for the support. Also grateful to BMC, BEST buses and most importantly, Mumbaikars, who are crucial stakeholders in our efforts towards sustainable development," he added.

Currently, 386 BEST buses are electric and will soon touch 50% by 2023 and 100% before 2027.

Issuing an official statement, the BMC said that Mumbai Electric Vehicle Cell will bring together government officials, e-mobility experts and representatives from the electric vehicle industry. It will assist policy makers in the promotion of electric vehicles, build infrastructure for electric vehicle charging in the Mumbai Metropolitan area, provide easy credit facilities for the purchase, implement state-of-the-art technology for in-vehicle batteries, and public transport.

For those unversed, the Maharashtra Industries Minister Subhash Desai on Wednesday, December 29, inaugurated its first EV charging poll near the Parel railway station.

The BMC’s ultimate aim is to set up 1,000 EV charging stations in the city in the coming years as the demand for electric vehicles is on the rise.

Earlier, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) looks to replace its current automobiles that use fossil fuels, with electric vehicles.

In the first stage, about 100 such vehicles will be acquired, not just for official purposes, but also for garbage transportation by the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department.
