As per reports, a small group of people have initiated the monthly drive to segregate, dispose and recycle dry waste in an organized manner in the Alibaug area.

Moreover, the Alibaug taluka which covers around 200 villages is a classic example of a semi-rural area rapidly transforming into semi-urban without adequate infrastructure to support the process. As weekend bungalows are slowly popping up in the area, the issue lies with the fact that the area does not have a proper drainage system, nor organised garbage disposal.

According to the Times of India, Sasawane gram panchayat had invested in a compactor to compress plastic waste as many continue to use the age-old concept of burning wastes. However, last week, at least thirty families gathered together in a bid to mobilize shops and homes in their areas for a round of clean up.

On the other hand, the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) had earlier requested the authorities to reconsider the proposed Virar-Alibaug multi-modal corridor alignment. In a meeting held back in July, the MCZMA stated that it requires a comprehensive survey on “quantification of mangroves” that may be impacted by this project. The Virar-Alibaug corridor was under the control of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), though the authorities have mentioned that they have now handed over its reins to the MSRDC (Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation).
