The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has confirmed the felling of 18 trees for the upcoming Metro 4 line. The move was approved by Municipal Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal

The civic body said that the trees will be cut between Garodia Nagar and Surya Nagar situated in the BMC’s M West Ward. Additionally, Six trees will be transplanted while four will remain in the region, the civic body said.

Activist Zoru Bhathena has asked the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to transplant the trees as part of Metro 2A in line with the works done for Metro 7.

“In Mumbai, when Metro stations are taken up for construction, trees on sidewalks will be cut, which will be a huge loss. Suppression of truth by the authorities does not help. A transparent approach will help save trees,” the activist added.

A total of 1,023 trees have been cut in Thane so far for the construction of the Metro 4 line while a proposal to cut an additional 450 trees was placed recently. The BMC meanwhile sent out notices in 2019 to cut 1,400 trees although a prior report had only proposed the cutting of 457 trees.
