The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deputy engineers recently inspected all 24 administrative wards in Mumbai and found many violations of the rules by civic body. Builders were not washing vehicle wheels carrying construction debris. Many sites lacked water sprinklers for dust control. Some sites failed to cover materials with iron sheets or tarpaulins.
The authorities found 437 construction sites violating 29 important rules to reduce air pollution. The BMC has given these sites seven days to comply. A final notice of three days will follow if violations continue. After this, work at non-compliant sites will stop until all rules are implemented.
Santacruz East received the highest number of notices with 58 violations. Malad followed with 49, and Bhandup had 38.
As per reports, Mumbai’s air quality worsens between November and February due to dust from construction sites, road dust, and burning of fuel. The problem became worse after the monsoon season when wind patterns changed.
To deal with this issue, the BMC introduced a dust mitigation plan in October 2023. It includes 29 rules for construction sites aimed at improving air quality. These inspections will make sure that these rules are followed across the city.
The inspections were delayed because over 60,000 civic officials and personnel were busy with election duties in November. With elections concluded, inspections have resumed. The goal is to reduce pollution levels in the city.
