According to the latest reports, on Wednesday, May 31, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) warned citizens of strict action regarding the utilization of banned plastic including single-use disposable plastic.

It has been reported that the civic authority elaborated on how the production, transportation, storage, sale, handling and use of prohibited plastic which has been prescribed by the Maharashtra government is prohibited. 

Based on accounts, the civic body has urged all to not use banned plastic, adding that otherwise legal action will be taken, officials added. 

Narratives suggest that in case of violations, by either producers, stockists, suppliers or sellers, they will have to pay INR 5,000 for the first offence and INR 10,000 for the second offence. If, however, they commit an offence after that they will be charged a fine of up to INR 25,000 and/or imprisonment for three months. 

The BMC was quoted in reports elaborating on how the restricted use of plastics includes, plastic bags which are with or without handles, disposable items such as plates, cups, glasses and spoons, amongst others, made of plastic and disposed of at once. 

It added that the list also includes, plastic items utilized for food packaging in hotels such as cups or pouches used for storing liquids which entails plastic and plastic wrap used for storing and packing all types of food, grains etc.
