On Tuesday, February 8, Maharashtra cabinet minister Aaditya Thackeray declared that fly ash dumping caused due to the State Power Generation Company at Nandgaon village has been curtailed from February 4 onwards, reports stated.

Thackeray took to Twitter to elaborate on how after hearing many grievances from residents of Nagpur on the fly ash dumping, he conducted a meeting with the concerned parties to comprehend the impact of pollution. He added that thus, he urged the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to intervene and promptly rectify the problem.

His tweet read, “Environmental protection & economic growth must go hand in hand. We are keen on sustainable development and more so, keen on renewable clean energy in the future. One cannot come at the cost of the other. I am thankful to citizens and NGOs who brought this to my notice.”

He also shared the letter that elucidated on how the disposal of ash slurry of 500 MW at Nandgaon Ash Bund has been curtailed, similarly, the Waregaon Ash Bund has been made operational for 500 MW.

In light of these developments, he remarked that the Dept of Environment & Climate Change, Govt. of Maharashtra and the Energy Ministry are jointly curating a pollution mitigation plan for thermal power stations across the state.

Apart from this, based on accounts, Nitin Gadkari told the MAHAGENCO CMD to ensure that environmental norms are adhered to while disposing of fly ash.
