The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has held four companies which include government-owned oil companies BPCL and HPCL, responsible for creating "gas chamber-like condition" in Mumbai's Mahul, Ambapada and Chembur areas and directed them to pay ₹286 crores in order to recompense for the damaged caused to the environment.

Mahul is an old village which happens to be nestled in the North East Mumbai. Big oil companies have ongoing projects in this place. Residents of Mahul and Ambapada villages had earlier lodged complaints with the green arbitration in 2014 alleging air pollution due to hazardous compounds.

Taking this into account, the green arbitration has ordered four companies in Mahul village, Aegis Logistics, HPCL, BPCL and Sea Lord, to pay a total fine of ₹286 crores over the next five years. Moreover, the amount of the fine was determined by considering how much volatile organic chemicals came out of which company and its potential consequences.

Due to the continual assault to the environment in the area, several residents have complained of severe lung diseases. Health experts have always stated that breathing volatile organic compounds for a long period of time is known to cause difficulty in breathing, damaging the central nervous system and other organs, besides causing irritation in the eyes, nose and throat.
