The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday, April 19, has issued a heatwave alert for Mumbai, along with neighbouring districts such as Thane and Palghar for the next few days.

This development by IMD’s regional meteorological centre (RMC), Mumbai, came as the city saw the daily maximum temperature above 37 degrees Celsius for two consecutive days.

Moreover, Mumbai recorded the third highest maximum day temperature in April during the last one decade as the IMD’s Santacruz observatory on Wednesday, April reported 38.8 degrees Celsius, which is five degrees above normal. Whereas, the IMD’s Colaba observatory reported 34 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees above normal.

According to IMD data, the highest maximum temperature in April, of 39 degrees Celsius, was recorded in 2014, followed by 38.9 degrees Celsius in April last year.

Meanwhile, on the same day, the IMD’s Thane Belapur observatory, located in Rabale, recorded the maximum temperature of 41 degrees Celsius.

Mumbai’s minimum temperature also crossed the normal level, with the Santacruz and Colaba observatories recording 25.6 and 26.6 degrees Celsius respectively, both of which are one degree above normal.

This sudden rise in the temperature over the past few days is attributed to the easterly winds that are blowing from the mainland resulting in delayed sea breeze.

However, weather experts have said there is a possibility for the temperature to fall marginally in the next couple of days.

The temperatures are high due to the formation of an anticyclone that has associated around Mumbai. In the next one or two days there is a chance of these anticyclone to disassociate, which may lead to a slight drop in the temperature.
