Mumbai might have to face heavy to very heavy rain over the weekend due to which the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have announced an orange alert for the district between Friday and Saturday. Thane and Palghar districts have been alerted with an orange alert and a red alert has been announced for Raigad and Ratnagiri districts.

Mumbai and nearby areas were hit by more heavy rain on Wednesday night, just a day after receiving over 60 mm of rainfall. By Thursday morning, the Santacruz weather station recorded 27 mm of rain, while Colaba saw 10 mm.

These pre-monsoon showers also led to a drop in temperatures. On Thursday morning, Santacruz recorded a minimum temperature of 22.5°C—five degrees cooler than usual. Daytime temperatures on Wednesday also dropped by nearly two degrees, staying around 32°C in both the city and suburbs.

This has been an unusual May. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Santacruz and Colaba stations have already recorded over 100 mm of rainfall—about 700% more than the average for this time of year.

Looking ahead, the IMD expects even more rain starting Friday. An orange alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, while Raigad and Ratnagiri districts are under a red alert due to forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall.
