The weather forecasting body, Skymet, stated that Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada received 50 per cent excess rainfall until June 28. Vidarbha, on the other hand, is at par as it has received regular rainfall, and Konkan and Goa are at surplus by 7 per cent.

In the last 24 hours, Santacruz recorded 39 mm of rainfall whereas Colaba recorded 34 mm rain. Santacruz has recorded 363 mm rain in the month of June against the monthly average of 493.1 mm. The city of Mumbai is still 130 mm behind its monthly rain average. According to Skymet, the amount of rainfall is now going to increase further, however, Mumbai will not make up the monthly average of June.

July has always been the rainiest month for Mumbai with the monthly average of 840.7 mm. Incessant rainfall activities can be expected to increase significantly in the first week of July. Mumbai may get moderate to heavy showers between July 3 and July 5. Intermittent rainfall will continue until July 10.

This year, there has been a delay in the onset of monsoons. This has led to water shortage and if it is delayed any further, the city will face water cuts in several parts. The seven lakes that provide water to the city of Mumbai are Bhatsa, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar on Thane-Nashik belt and Tulsi and Vihar in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SNGP).

This is the third time when Mumbai has received less than 10 per cent of water stock in the last six years. This is usually a consequence of insufficient rain in the previous years or a delay in the monsoons. So far, the city has received only a few spells of the rain in multiple pockets. Therefore, the upcoming days are crucial for Mumbai.
