The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) have decided to give 1,014 hectares of mangroves to the Maharashtra forest department for safekeeping in accordance with an order of the Bombay High Court dating 16 years ago, cited reports.

On Monday, April 18, state environment minister Aaditya Thackeray took to Twitter saying that in the review meeting, the JNPT agreed to give 815 hectares of its land to the Forest Department as mangroves and the MMRDA agreed to give 199 hectares of land.

His tweet further remarked, "Over the last 2 years, our regular meetings with Forest Dept and mangrove cell has got more than 11,000 ha of land under the protection of the Indian Forest Act officially."

Based on accounts, with this transfer of mangroves, nearly 2,000 hectares of mangroves on government land are left to be handed over. Of this, a considerable portion of almost 1,400 hectares is in the Vasai-Virar limits. While another 800 hectares is across bodies that include the Navi Mumbai Integrated Industrial Area near the JNPT, mentioned narratives.

It has been reported that earlier the JNPT was penalised by the judiciary appointed mangrove protection and conservation committee was negatively impacting almost 4,500 mangroves for its container terminal-4 port expansion project.
