Over the last weekend, the Mumbai Climate Action Plan was released. Herein, municipal wards have been categorized based on various parameters as most and least vulnerable.

According to reports, the M East ward (Deonar, Govandi, Mankhurd) was ranked the least in the majority of the socio-economic strata. Based on accounts, the said ward has Mumbai’s largest landfill in its administrative jurisdiction.

The report then goes on to state that the said ward has the largest percentage of households dependent on polluting cooking fuels at more than 45 per cent.

The report highlights that the ward also has the highest percentage of households without taps within its premises at 46.4 per cent. Moreover, 47.9 per cent of this ward depends on unhygienic water disposal mechanisms.

On the other hand, the action plan categorises areas of Matunga and Wadala to be worst affected during floods with the greatest number of flood-prone areas.

However, the action plan then goes on to suggest that the study undertaken is largely dependent on the Census 2011 data. The study claims that the data is outdated and could not present Mumbai’s vulnerability when it comes to disasters caused by climatic conditions.

Therefore, the study opines a more comprehensive study of vulnerability parameters as well as recommends community resilience.
