According to the Air Quality Index (AQI), Mumbai has the highest concentration of Particulate Matter (PM) PM10 among the 24 major cities of peninsular India.
Over the last few years, the particulate concentration in the city saw a surge. It has made Mumbai the most polluted city out of the three prominent coastal cities. The other cities are Kolkata and Chennai.
As per AQI, due to overpopulation, congestion, rapid industrialization, reduction in green cover, and increasing urbanization, there has been a rise in pollution.

The pollution is lesser in summers compared to winters as the heat levels down pollution slightly. The AQI has stated that the sources of air pollution are industries, power plants, vehicular and biofuel emissions, construction, open burning and dust.
Mumbai has been experiencing a rise in pollution levels because of which there are extreme weather conditions. The rise in pollution has resulted in poor AQI in the city.
Meanwhile, the country observes National Pollution Control Day on December 2 every year. The day is observed in remembrance of the people who lost their lives during the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy. Not only this but on this day awareness is created about the hazards of air pollution.
