On Saturday, October 3, parts of the city experienced loud thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds amidst moderate rainfall for a few hours in the evening. This was followed by another rain spell on Sunday morning. 

The rainfall that Mumbai received over the weekend was the second-highest rainfall that it had got in 24-hour span in the month of October. By Sunday morning 8:30 am, the Santacruz weather had recorded 55.8mm rain over 24 hours, while the Colaba weather observatory, recorded 15mm rain. 

KS Hosalikar, deputy director-general, western region, India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said, "Mumbai had two distinct events of thunderstorms with lightning, associated with intense spells of rains. One during evening 5 pm to 8 pm and the second one early morning between 3.30 am to 5 am". 

The highest rainfall that Mumbai has received ever was 140.8mm that was recorded on October 4, 1988. However, this decades record was set on October 13, 2011, when the maximum city had received 71mm rainfall. 

On Saturday evening and Sunday morning, many areas in the suburbs, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan received rainfall between 70mm and 100mm. However, post this the rain activity subsidised and no rain was recorded between 8.30 am and 8.30 pm on Sunday.

IMD has predicted that there are chances of light rainfall and Thunderstorm on Monday as well. 

According to the meteorological body, the seasonal rainfall in the state has been normal. Maharashtra has recorded 16 per cent excess rain this year, with Marathwada recording surplus rain throughout the season. Even though 19 per cent and +19 per cent rainfall of the long period average is termed normal, Marathwada has clocked 30 per cent more downpour than the seasonal average at 866.1 mm rain. However, three districts in Vidarbha, namely, Amravati (-20), Akola (-27) and Yavatmal (-24) – recorded deficient rainfall.
