Mumbaikars woke up to a blanket of haze with the minimum temperature reaching to 18.4 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, January 21.
This development comes at a time when the city is experiencing a significant rise in temperatures for the past few days with the maximum temperatures hovering between 34-35 degrees since January 17.
On Monday, January 20, the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Santacruz observatory recorded maximum temperature of 35.4 degrees Celsius, nearly 4.3 degrees above the normal, making the city hottest in the state. Meanwhile, the Colaba coastal observatory also registered 24 degrees, which was also over 3.8 degree Celsius above the normal.
In its forecast bulletin, the IMD has said that the temperatures are slated to dip up to 31 degrees from Tuesday, January 21. However, the drop is slated to be short live. The weather experts have warned of another wave of hot temperatures from January 25 when temperatures are to soar up to 36 degrees.
As per reports, Mumbai had also sizzled at 36 degrees Celsius on January 3. The highest-ever recorded maximum temperature in Mumbai was on January 16, 2006. If the mercury hits 36 degrees Celsius, Saturday will mark the hottest January day in Mumbai since 2016, for the second time this year.

Air Quality Index (AQI):
On January 21, the Central Pollution Control Board’s SAMEER app reported in its latest Mumbai weather updates that the city’s air quality remained in the 'moderate' category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 138 at 9:05 AM.
As per the SAMEER app dashboard, many areas across Mumbai showed 'moderate' AQI. Bandra Kurla Complex recorded 'moderate' air quality with an AQI of 147. Byculla, Ghatkopar and Malad recorded 'moderate' air quality with an AQI of 156, 141 and 179, respectively.
Meanwhile, Borivali and Colaba recorded 'good' air quality, with an AQI of 86 and 78, respectively.
According to data from the SAMEER app, Navi Mumbai recorded air quality in the 'moderate' category with an AQI of 147, while Thane registered a 'moderate' AQI of 104.
