Mumbai has been sweltering for the past few days with temperatures running well above the normal levels.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai and MMR will experience light drizzles and cloudy weather for two days, starting today, March 9. However, after that, it will be back to clear, dry weather.

This development is owing to the interaction of a western disturbance with a trough (a mild form of low-pressure area) running from the southeast Arabian Sea of the Kerala coast to the Konkan coast, said IMD officials.

The IMD has forecast a 7-9 per cent chance of rain in the early hours of Wednesday for Mumbai.

Therefore, experts stated that Mumbai may see a rise in the maximum and minimum temperature over the weekend.

As on Wednesday, March 9, IMD’s Santacruz observatory marked the maximum temperature at 36.2 degrees Celsius, whereas Colaba observatory recorded 33.6 degrees Celsius.

A day earlier, on Tuesday, March 8, the maximum temperature dipped to 34 degrees Celsius and 31 degrees Celsius at Santacruz and Colaba respectively.

While Mumbaikars witnessed partly cloudy weather this morning, March 9, it brought no respite from the humidity and temperature.

Moreover, for north Maharashtra, a warning has been issued for thunderstorms and hailstones as well, especially for regions like Jalgaon and Dhule.

Apart from this, IMD’s regional forecasting centre in the city has warned of thunderstorms in Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Nandurbar, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli and Nagpur till March 9, while strong winds are expected till March 10.

The weather department also forecast yellow warning, which is a possibility of thunderstorms with light/moderate rains on March 10-11. Additionally, Pune experienced light showers last night, March 8.

Meanwhile, agricultural experts note that unseasonal rain could prove to be a nightmare for the standing mango crop at this time.

Meanwhile, earlier, in the beginning of March, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, the temperature will rise above average this summer in Mumbai.

After weeks of pleasant weather, a combination of humidity, low wind speed and rise in temperature in Mumbai has been witnessed in March first week.
