A few days ago, results for the Swachh Bharat Survekshan 2021 was released in which Mumbai was ranked at 37th position. The corporators across the parties have now slammed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for not doing enough to solve solid waste management issues. They have also criticized citizens for not doing enough to keep the city clean.

This year Mumbai's position slipped by two points. Last year, it was at 35th position, while in 2019, it was ranked 49th.

When the results came out, Sangeeta Hasnale, Deputy municipal commissioner, pointed out that the civic body was busy in its fight against the novel coronavirus; hence there was a slip in the rankings.

While the corporators said that this isn't the first time since the administration has failed to make it in the top ten cleanest cities or even top 25, even though their efforts look good on paper.

Ravi Raja, Leader of Opposition in the BMC and Congress corporator, cited lack of cleanliness, ethics, and basic sense amongst citizens as being one of the few factors in a drop in Mumbai's rankings, highlighted reports.

He further said that the civic body should focus on real issues and work on them. These include garbage disposal and waste segregation process.

NCP corporator from Kurla Dr Saeeda Khan said that enough toilets are not built. If there are toilets, there are no proper lights, bleaching powder, detergent and brooms.

Meanwhile, for next year's survey, all 24 wards of Mumbai will be competing with each other to get the cleanest tag.

It is not the first time that the opposition has slammed BMC for its work. Earlier, they had opposed the civic body's costly tender for upkeeping the Byculla zoo penguin. A few days ago, they had also slammed the MVA government and called Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray a 'part-time' CM.
