The Maharashtra government has recently decided to reopen 102 stone quarries in Navi Mumbai.

A quarry happens to be a place where rocks, sand, or minerals are extracted from the surface of the Earth. According to sources, 40,000 workers are currently working on this quarry which includes Bhumiputras.

After acquiring land for Navi Mumbai, CIDCO had allotted stone quarries to Bhumiputras as a means of livelihood. However, due to some technical reasons, 102 quarries have been closed for the last five years. Due to the closure of these quarries, the livelihood of 35 to 40 thousand people was at stake.

However, after the Maha Vikas Aghadi government came to power in the state, Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde launched a special effort to bring justice to Bhumiputras, the owner of the quarries. Moreover, Shinde raised a number of issues related to CIDCO and project-affected quarries. He also held a meeting with the quarry owners.

Meanwhile, the controversy over the naming of Navi Mumbai international airport has intensified as Project Affected People (PAP) called for a gherao movement outside the CIDCO office to pressure the government to name the airport after its leader D B Patil. The PAP is reportedly backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists.

Meanwhile, permission has not been granted to hold the protest. The PAP claimed that around one lakh people are participating in the protest. Anticipating a law and order situation, section 144 of the criminal procedure code has been imposed for the unlawful assembly of more than five persons. Section 144 will remain in place for 60 days from June 21 till August 19.
